Title: Hockey
Post by: Jarno on September 14, 2006, 01:36:07 AM
So, any fans of the coolest game on earth. Our own Finnish League starts today and NHL next month. Can't wait til NHL season starts. Couple interesting player moves this summer, Bertuzzi - Florida, Pronger - Anaheim, - Luongo - Vancouver, Shanahan - Rangers and Malkin - Pittsburgh. I'm rooting for Leafs as usual, but i think that Flames and Mighty Ducks will be though this season again.

Best Goalie - Miikka Kiprusoff
Best Defenseman - Scott Niedermayer
Best Offensive player - Joe Thornton or Peter Forsberg
Enforcers - George Laraque - Brian Mcgrattan - Derek Boogaard
Biggest pest - Sean Avery
Rookie of the year - Evgeni Malkin

Stanley Cup Winners 2006-2007 - Calgary Flames

Being Calgarian...the Flames are like the ONLY way to go for me...I seriously CRIED when they lost the cup to Tampa in 2004...It's nice to know that someone thinks we have a chance! And I love Miikka. He's awesome!

Biggest pest - Sean Avery

loooollllll That's really true. ^^

Anyway I'm a Red Wings supporter so I was a bit disapointed by the last season cause they had the potential but their defense was waeker without Jiri Fisher.

This season should be good even if division's teams like Nashville or Colombus are better than last year. The 100 000$ question for the Wings is "Does Dominik Hasek can make another great season ???". I'm really worried about that...

To finish, I will also have a look on the only player from my country: Cristobal Huet !!! I really hope he should be as good as he'd shown last season.

Buffalo started the season pretty good and Dallas seems to be strong as always. Here's a cool picture from Finnish league game Jokerit vs HIFK which took place on tuesday. Ryan Vandenbussche and Pasi Nielikäinen dropping the gloves, good fight. Check it out from youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxDQuQmzpd8

Have I ever mentioned that I hate shootouts?

FINAL (SO)

   1 2 3 OT SO T
  MONTREAL
CANADIENS «
(0-0-1)
  1 0 1 0 1(2) 3
  TORONTO
MAPLE LEAFS
(1-1-0)
  1 1 0 0 0(1) 2

It looked like a good game on the live scoreboard.  Unfortunately the only game I can watch is the Wild game which started off bad for them but it's tied right now.

Considering how much the Habs suck in shootouts, I'm very surprised they managed to pull out a win.  Also, with the way the Habs were playing in the first two periods, I was getting nervous.  But everything worked out in the end  8)

7 more games to go between our two teams.

Ahhhhh, the WONDERFUL Oilers game on Friday night. (Me? Sarcastic?)  If anyone hasn't heard about it, here ya go:

So the Oilers were down 3-1 in the third period. Then, with about 3 minutes left, they score a goal, so it's 3-2. Then, with about FIVE SECONDS LEFT they score the tying goal. 3-3. Or did they?
Ref Mick Megough (sp?) called the goal back on the basis of a hand pass from Shawn Horcoff on the face-off. WHICH DIDN'T HAPPEN. Looking back at the replays, there was definetly no hand pass and it was clearly a legitimate goal. But no, one bad judgement call cost the Oilers the game!!!!  :x

So after the game, the coach Craig MacTavish was speaking about it, and apparently he went 'overboard' with saying things like "retarded" and "spastic". He's not getting at 10 000$ fine, for speaking the truth about a clearly legitimate goal.

That's pretty much all anyone here's talking about.

As a Finn i would like to see Anaheim Vs Buffalo in Stanley Cup Finals. Teppo Numminen Vs Teemu Selänne, Teppo is the man and hopefully he gets the crown to his 18 year nhl career. Then again it would be nice to see Canadian team to win the cup. I like the Ducks playing old time hockey unlike Detroit full of Swedes, still dressing those tough guys like Brad May, Shawn Thornton and George "the Stache" Parros... Needles to say i'm a big fan of enforcers and good ol' hockey fights...

To continue in the right thread Jim, (Re: Souray) I would be happy he was gone if we only replaced him with a big gun or two. He was my favourite player that we had because I looked right over his lack of ability to skate backwards and just looked at the leadership, the blueline quaterbacking, the powerplay, the hitting, and the ability to be one hell of a transporter with the puck for his forwards.

I don't blame Gainey for not making any big moves because most of the names I wanted gone are already. His press release headline "We Need to Build from Within" is about all he could say because it just goes to show you that nobody in their right mind wants to play in the pressure cooker city of Montreal. Especially with below avarage teams in the last 6 or 7 years. That's the most upsetting thing about being a Habs fan for me.

Either way, Souray is closer to Los Angeles and will be playing the West Coast a lot more often so he'll be able to see his family. What's the deal with him and Angelica, anyway? I though they were divorced but they were arm-in-arm at the All Star game and now he's talking like everything's all good again.

I guess the bottom line is, he never planned on staying in Montreal. The Habs even offered more money.

I agree that Souray was a great leader, and that will be hard to replace.  Unfortunately, he's not worth the money he's getting, and I'm glad he's gone.   I'd like to keep him if it was for 4 million a year, otherwise Edmonton can have him.  Montreal has enough prospect depth that they can do without him.
Title: Re: Hockey

Souray is definately not the be-all-end-all by any stretch. It's just a sad day when any all-stars leave Montreal. It's just that I have been hearing the words "rebuild" and "youngsters" for the last 10 years and I am getting a little sick of having nothing but 3rd line fowards (at best, anywhere else in the league) on our top lines.

my grandma used to take me skating when i was around 18-24 months old, and back in the day the rink for public skating was also used for the pro hockey here, so after bugging her "whats that big panther on the middle of the ice for"when i was about 4 she took me to hockey.

she was far more into it than me, but my love of the sport comes from her, and it's a good memory i have of her.

that and the mighty ducks films, which are fucking awesome.

and the oilers supporting well a girl who is kinda like a sister to me lives out near edmonton so when i went to see her i went to see them.

Very cool.  It's great to see some love for hockey in a non-traditional market.  Did you see the two NHL games in London this year?

No, I didn't see much of their previous calibre in tonight's match, but I didn't see any huge mistakes from NY either, it just seemed as if the goaltending dropped off the face of the planet.

There's no TSN, CBC, local channels from Michigan or Pennsylvania?

it's the damned Stanley Cup and you can't get it??

That sucks.

It's the 2nd intermission with Detroit up 2-0.

Thanks for the update.  I've gone up and down from local access to the HBO's.  Nothing.  Last year they showed it on the NBC affiliate.  I can watch any other sport but hockey thanks to the last strike and ESPN telling them to settle or this is what would happen.

since i've been bored today i just read some old articles from links on wiki and found this:

---------------------
The British ice hockey league handed out suspensions totalling 28 games and fines worth 8,400 pounds ($18,750) Wednesday in the wake of a mass brawl between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers last week...

...Eight players and two coaches -- all Canadian -- were ejected after the mass brawl which forced game officials to send the teams to their locker-rooms for a 45-minute cooling-off period.

Officials handed out 404 penalty minutes in one period, a league record. There were also records for the most penalty minutes by one team in a game, with Nottingham getting 230. The most penalty minutes in one period, with Sheffield tallying 211. And the most total penalty minutes at 453.

Nottingham won the game 6-4.

i don't really know much about the youth system over there in all honesty.

nottingham panthers still going strong 100% league record

^With grace, ease and a few bloody knuckles they would.  :P

Put it this way: Since our club's inception, they've put over a few hundred players into the NHL, including such greats as Darryl Sittler, Rick Nash, Brenden Shanahan as well as future greats like Corey Perry, Danny Syvret and again, more.

NHL Prospect Alexei Cherepanov has died at age 19. Following what appears to have been an accidental collision with Jaromir Jagr during a KHL game, he collapsed and died.

It's reported that Jagr was shouting through tears "Wake up Alexei" upon the incident.

Poor kid and poor Jagr. The risks of contact sports...
